BPDC was created in 1994 by founding artistic director Deborah Brockus to provide access to affordable quality dance in the greater LA region and to provide creative outlet for the voices of artists to tell the stories of LA. Brockus observed that missing was opportunities for concert dancers to perform and choreography to be seen and mentorship, reviews and support for starting dance companies was not available. Brockus Project Dance Company was created at a time when there was not much concert dance in LA. Over the years since 1994, BPDC has worked to enact change, bring more inclusion to the table and level the playing field we have watched the community grow and continue to push for a stronger more inclusive community and voice in the arts. BPDC has provided development and access to artists from our culturally and racially diverse community in the greater LA region providing a space and encouragement for artistic development for contemporary voices from all backgrounds. Over the years, our organization has: produced over 200 showcases for local choreographers from emerging to advanced professionals involving over 500 choreographers and thousands of dancers and audience members and fought to get each show reviewed, and provided video and photos to each company for their publicity use, hosted over 20 international master classes and 10 long workshops hundreds of open adult classes providing artistic professional development, numerous town halls and lectures, worked with over 15,000 of LA’s at risk youth both in school and after school in classes and performances, connected dance to community with annual Dance/BACK charity events, raised the visibility and viability of LA Dance by creating emerging showcases and the high level Los Angeles Dance Festival to increase the viability careers for LA companies, served hundreds of dancers and choreographers by creating a hub and home for concert dance in our rehearsal studio BPS, empowering artists by included mentoring of arts administration and involvement for the next generation to ensure stability and continuity of arts growth in the future, created international exchanges with France, India, Korea and Finland.
